The next Release curated by Fakewhale presents COMMUNICATOR, a 15-second video loop by James Bloom, hosted on the artist’s custom Manifold contract.

James Bloom, COMMUNICATOR • Video Still, (2025)
Through COMMUNICATOR, Bloom transforms the visual grammar of advertising into a digital field of recursion and collapse, where the structure of communication dissolves into chaos.
Borrowing the formal layout of commercial media, COMMUNICATOR replaces image, slogan, and brand with pulsating 3D fractals — iterative geometries that unfold infinitely within the computer. What appears as an emblem of clarity becomes a vortex of motion, a simulation of infinity staged as spectacle. The work builds an unstable equilibrium between familiarity and vertigo, using technological precision to generate perceptual uncertainty.
Within Bloom’s practice, technological innovation becomes a strategy for revealing the cognitive contradictions of the networked condition. His systems connect participants in real time, yet their engineered uselessness exposes the limits of interactivity itself. COMMUNICATOR emerges from this conceptual field as both experiment and critique, a digital artifact that mirrors the language of connection while short-circuiting its meaning.
The work inverts the function of communication by replacing message with mechanism. Advertising, once the grammar of persuasion, becomes the syntax of recursion; the loop, once a unit of repetition, becomes an image of entropy. In this sense, COMMUNICATOR performs failure as a structural principle, translating the excess of information into a visual paradox where chaos functions as clarity.
The piece resonates with Bloom’s broader interest in autonomy and disruption, in systems that produce order only to reveal its instability.
Through controlled collapse, COMMUNICATOR articulates a vision of technology as both generative and self-consuming, an environment that continuously tests the boundaries between perception, machine logic, and human cognition.

James Bloom, COMMUNICATOR (Wireframe stage), 2025 · Process visualization from the 3D fractal model
At its core lies a fascination with chaos theory: a meditation on the infinite feedback loops produced by computation. Bloom’s fractals do not represent nature; they perform it. They exist as mathematical attractors that invite the viewer to travel inward, inside the logic of the machine, where motion never concludes and meaning continually restarts.
Through this dynamic, COMMUNICATOR extends Bloom’s exploration of technology as a field of autonomy and perceptual disturbance. The work frames the computer not as an instrument of order but as a generator of recursive freedom, an environment where control and disorientation coexist as productive states.
